What are they thinking?

Here are the old Iraqi flag and the Israeli flag

And here are several Arab flags along with the new Iraqi flag selected by the U.S. appointed Iraqi Governing Council. Can you tell which one it is?

Josh Marshall:

The Associated Press gets it pretty much right when it says, "The new design not only abandons the symbols of Saddam's regime. It also avoids the colors used in other Arab flags: green and black for Islam and red for Arab nationalism."

But, really, why would we worry about that, since Islam and nationalism don't seem to have very big audiences over there anyway?

I like the solid green one. Very 'environmenty'.

I heard their second choice was a U.S. flag, but with the 50 stars replaced by 50 crescents.

Forget about the artwork, what gives an unelected governing council that is appointed by occupying powers and remotely controlled to change the core symbol of a nation?

Couldn’t they wait to have a democratically elected government?

People are dying every passing hour and they are worried about changing the flag? the future does not really look that bright !

Is it the one with the tree?

A good point from www.empirenotes.com:

"It's understandable that Kurds, threatened by pan-Arabism, would want a break from the Arab color scheme. But surely there were other colors?

I also don't understand another part of the symbolism. The crescent is for Islam, the blue bars for the Tigris and the Euphrates, and the yellow bar for the Kurds. Either the Arabs have been left out or there's at least an implication that Kurds are not Muslims."

I'm sorry. I must have misunderstood what the U.S. meant by "regime change." Like, when G.W. finally gets impeached for war crimes, will that mean the United States will need to get a new flag, too?

Right. So, regime change now means "completely change everything about the country in which the regime held power for 25 years, even the things in place before said regime." Why not change the name of the country? I have a suggestion: Why not name the new American colony "Palestine"?

That should settle everything.

Actually, the country IS going to change its name. I know you were joking, but it ain't no joke.

If a team is in a positive frame of mind, it will have a good
attitude. If it has a good attitude, it will make a commitment to
playing the game right. If it plays the game right, it will win --
unless, of course, it doesn't have enough talent to win, and no manager
can make goose-liver pate out of goose feathers, so why worry?
